Expect warm greetings and endless hospitality. Tea is offered everywhere, and refusing it politely is better than declining rudely.
- Greet with 'Salam alaykum' and a smile
- Accept tea or coffee when offered
- Use your right hand for eating and shaking
- Ask permission before photographing people
- Bargaining is expected in bazaars — do it warmly
Friday is the main day of prayer — many businesses close for a few hours at midday, and shops may be busier in the evening.
Learning two or three Arabic words — shukran (thank you), afwan (you're welcome) — is met with genuine delight.
