Currency
Egypt runs mostly on cash, but cards work in modern businesses. Knowing when to use each saves you money.
Tour Egypt Club Editorial
The Egyptian pound (EGP) is the only widely accepted currency. The official rate is now close to the street rate, so official exchange offices give you a fair deal.
How to Pay
- Withdraw from bank ATMs for the best card rates
- Carry small notes for taxis, bazaars and tips
- Cards work in hotels, malls and chains
- Agree taxi and market prices in advance — in EGP
Never exchange money on the street. Use banks, exchange offices or airport counters.
Keep some 10 and 20 EGP notes for tipping — they are the smallest common denominations and always welcome.
